Why Maharashtra Is Emerging as the Hub for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Over the past few years, Maharashtra has rapidly positioned itself as a major center for lithium-ion battery production, thanks to strategic investments, robust infrastructure, and progressive government incentives. Here’s how the state is transforming into India’s premier battery ecosystem.

1. Strategic Industrial Ecosystem & Connectivity

  • Maharashtra benefits from world-class infrastructure—including major ports like Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), industrial zones in Pune, Aurangabad, and Nagpur, and seamless road and rail networks—making it ideal for manufacturing, assembly, and export operations.

  • Industrial parks such as Aurangabad Industrial City (AURIC) and Khed City offer plug-and-play facilities tailored to advanced sectors.

2. Major Investments Fueling the Region

  • Vardhaan Lithium (I) Pvt. Ltd., located in Butibori, Nagpur, is building India’s first integrated lithium refinery and battery plant on a 500-acre site, backed by ₹42,532 crore. It will have a capacity to refine 60,000 tpa lithium and manufacture 20 GWh/year of batteries.

  • JSW Group has committed ₹15,000 crore to build a lithium-ion battery plant in Nagpur, with 450 acres allocated and GST and clearance incentives offered by the state.

  • Kinetic Group has launched the Range-X EV battery facility in Ahmednagar with an annual production of 60,000 battery packs, focusing on LFP and NMC chemistries.

  • Endurance Technologies is developing a lithium-ion pack manufacturing plant near Pune (Maval), targeting 35,000 packs/month by early 2026.

3. Policy Support & Alignments

  • Following agreements signed at WEF Davos 2025, the Maharashtra government is fast-tracking land allotments, fiscal incentives, and approvals specifically for battery and clean-tech companies.

  • Capital equipment duty exemptions covering over 35 goods necessary for EV and battery production further support industry growth.

4. Skilled Workforce & Supply Chain Network

  • Maharashtra’s talent ecosystem—with skilled engineers, technicians, research institutions, and ancillary suppliers—provides strong support for EV and battery production.

  • OEMs, component manufacturers, logistics providers, and service vendors are co-located across Pune, Aurangabad, Nashik, and Nagpur, enhancing industrial synergy.

5. Vardhaan Lithium: The Anchor of Maharashtra’s Battery Vision

  • As the cornerstone project, Vardhaan Lithium will power Maharashtra’s lithium ecosystem. With a fully integrated facility from mining to battery production and global technology partners, the company anchors the state’s ambition to lead the EV supply chain.

  • Vertical integration—from lithium sourcing in Zimbabwe to refining and cell/pack production in Nagpur—ensures supply stability, scale, and strategic control.

Final Thought

Maharashtra is not just enabling India’s EV and lithium-ion battery growth—it is defining it. With anchor investments, smart infrastructure, enabling policy frameworks, and a world-class project like Vardhaan Lithium at its core, Maharashtra stands poised to be India’s undisputed hub for battery innovation, manufacturing, and export.
